The event is RDRC’s only fundraiser to support our youth programs and services that provide deserving but underserved youth with afterschool tutoring, employment, internships, mentorship, trips, college placement assistance and scholarships.


Many of the youth participants we serve are families who cannot afford to pay for the extra academic supports, travel related expenses to attend college fairs, college tours, museums or cultural centers of learning that help shape their educational and career pathways. This years’ event will be hosted by the dynamic, Emmy award winning QPTV host & producer, Roslyn “Roz” Nieves, so you know the event will be high energy!


Al Harris Named Chairman of the QPCC Board of Directors

Queens Public Communications Corp. (QPCC), known as QPTV, announced on June 8 that Alfred (Al) Harris has been elected Chairman of the QPCC Board of Directors, succeeding John B. Haney, PhD. A retired public relations manager after 40 years with Con Edison — including 20 years representing the company in Queens — Harris also brings service as past chairman of the Flushing YMCA Board of Managers and past president of the Rotary Club of Flushing.

Virtual Presentation for International Jazz Day to be Celebrated Worldwide in 191 Countries jazzday.com Overview of "International Jazz Day"

     "International Jazz Day celebrations in Cape Town, 2020 Global Host, and other cities across South Africa, including the All-Star Global Concert of 30 April, will not take place as scheduled. This decision was taken in response to the country’s official health guidelines. It reflects the high priority given to the health and safety of all those involved by UNESCO, its partner the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz, and local organizing partners, including the Spin Foundation, the City  of Cape Town, South African ministries and departments, as well as community leaders.

     International Jazz Day will nevertheless be celebrated on 30 April mainly online. Resources, information and ideas on how to mark International Jazz Day can be found on jazzday.com, where jazz lovers and practitioners are invited to post their videos and audio recordings. Other virtual forms of participation to show solidarity with everyone affected by the current sanitary challenge are also welcome.

     Organizers and participants are encouraged to devise creative ways to celebrate jazz and its unifying message while minimizing risk of exposure to COVID-19.

Previous editions of the All-Star Global Concert, and a virtual forum featuring acclaimed artists and webcasts of exclusive content will be also be posted on jazzday.com on 30 April.

    Established by the General Conference of UNESCO in 2011 and recognized by the United Nations General Assembly, International Jazz Day brings together countries and communities worldwide every 30 April to celebrate jazz and highlight the music’s role in encouraging dialogue, combating discrimination and promoting human dignity.

International Jazz Day has become a global movement reaching billions of people annually."

International Jazz Day was celebrated in 2017 in Havana, Cuba as the worldwide celebration of Jazz as a force for peace, intercultural dialogue, and international communication. The brain child of jazz pianist Herbie Hancock, International Jazz Day April 30, 2020, is recognized on the calendars of both United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the United Nations, with host cities in Sydney, Australia and Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Queens Public Television was present to document"The Chapman Roberts' Broadway Jazz Festival, 50th Anniversary Concert Tribute To Duke Ellington and Pastor John Gensel "Shepherd Who Watches Over The Night Flock" which was recorded on International Jazz Day 2018 at St. Peter's Church, New York City, in anticipation of the 2020 International Jazz Day Festival.

This historic event chronicles a spectacular performance that celebrates the 100 year legacy of the contributions and influences of African America’s Greatest Jazz Composers on Broadway.
Watch this program to experience musical and spoken tributes to: Cab Calloway, Bessie Smith, Mary Lou Williams, Hugh Masekela, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Fats Waller, J.C. Johnson, Billie Holiday, Eubie Blake, Noble Sissle, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Donna Summers, Jon Hendricks, Louis Armstrong and Billy Strayhorn; performed by New York’s Brightest Broadway and Cabaret Jazz Stars like you've never seen before.
Four Time Grammy Award Recipient Broadway Choral Arranger Chapman Roberts' assembles alumni of his Broadway hits such as “Bubbling Brown Sugar”, “Your Arm’s Too Short To Box With God”, “Eubie”, “Smokey Joe’s Café,” and a reunion of the Broadway National and International Companies of "Five Guys Named Moe," in a special tribute to the "King of the Juke Box," Louis Jordan.
