Around Queens: Honey and the Bees

In November of 2018, Tom founded the Queens Beekeepers Guild, Inc. which is a charitable 501(c)(3) organization formed to help beekeepers in Queens grow their knowledge and to educate the local public on the importance of honey bees as well as our native pollinators. In December 2020 they officially became the first New York City beekeepers to be part of the New York State Grown & Certified program. All honey from our New York State hives falls under this category and can contain the official logo.

QNS Collaborative, is a group of Astorians and residents of Greater Queens who had an idea for a space in their neighborhood and are working together to build it. They represent business owners, community care groups, activists, makers, artists, and more. They’re building a community space: welcoming, supportive, group-led. Fix your bike, drop off compost, buy from a local maker, grab a coffee, find companionship in growing your small business, organize collective action, take or give free books, food, and hygiene items that you need, hear a local performing artist, learn from a community-hosted skill-share, meet with your book club. Queens Delish: Birria-Landia

Birria-Landia Tijuana Style Birria-Landia is a taco food truck that began in the Jackson Heights neighborhood of Queens, New York in the summer of 2019 and quickly became a favorite of locals and critics alike, earning a high rating from The New York Times.
The truck was born from the idea of brothers José and Jesús Moreno, it specializes in rich and juicy birria, a stew made with beef and spices, which the brothers use in tacos, tostadas and mulitas. You can also have a cup of hot broth or bouillon. The best way to eat the tacos is by dipping them in the consommé.

Queens Stories: King’s Journey

Six-year-old King Singh from Queens Village, NY is currently battling Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. King is truly a walking miracle, always smiling and inspiring, even as he receives daily chemotherapy treatments and works through many severe side effects. King and his family have become childhood cancer advocates working closely with NPCF (National Pediatric Cancer Foundation) and believe research funding is paramount in leading to less toxic treatments and cures. As pediatric cancer is heavily underfunded and many patients don't survive the complications associated with its treatment, the Singhs are on a mission to spread global awareness in hopes that one day research is done to declare cancer a thing of the past.

Around Queens: Beer Festival

The first and only festival in Queens is highlighting the exploding craft brewery scene in New York City and particularly Queens County. Over 2,000 attendees came out this year to meet, taste, and discover the local breweries and seasonal craft beers offered. The event also included activities and live music.
This event happens only in Queens, and it shares all the diversity Queens has to offer, and the community it brings together.

PURE is an immersive performative installation that investigates the influence of imagination and narratives on our perception of reality and their impact on the relations that compose « Me » and the « others things.
Guided on a parcours made of permanent situations and latent visual compositions, the audience activates these living pictures simply by incorporating their physical presence into it. With each personal background and history coming into play, visitors are invited to explore the various ways by which we design our reality, ranging from how we choose to construct an image, to our more unconscious hopes, fears or desires.

Around Queens: The Night Before Eid

Eid al-Fitr also called the “Festival of Breaking the Fast”, is a religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting. This religious Eid (Muslim religious festival) is the first and only day in the month of Shawwal during which Muslims are not permitted to fast. The holiday celebrates the conclusion of the 29 or 30 days of dawn-to-sunset fasting during the entire month of Ramadan. Rajaa Singh was raised in an interfaith home and along with Diwali she and her family celebrates Eid.

Around Queens: Helping Incarcerated Moms

Sister Tesa Fitzgerald, the Executive Director of Hour Children, became a foster parent in 1986 to eight children of incarcerated mothers at the convent where she lived. That set the beginning of her work with families impacted by incarceration. In 1992, she founded Hour Children as a nonprofit organization to offer supportive services to other children of incarcerated mothers and the mothers themselves. Before that, she was responsible for New York State curriculum oversight for Catholic elementary schools for the Diocese of Brooklyn and both a school principal and teacher at various Catholic elementary schools. In addition to being an educator, she is a Certified Foster Care Trainer. Sister Tesa has been named a CNN Hero (2012), a White House Champion of Change (2013), the 2014 winner of the Opus Prize, and in 2015 was awarded the Cross Pro-Ecclesia et Pontifice. In 2017, Sister Tesa named to the Irish American Hall-of-Fame.

Made in Queens: The Wood Carver
A custom woodcarver sculptor, Deborah Mills specializes in hand-carved wood ornament and artwork for architectural and decorative elements: original sculptures, carved mantels, doors, entryways, newel posts, furniture of all styles and periods, heraldry, liturgical furnishings, paneling, friezes, nautical decoration. She has been carving wood professionally since 1991. She studied wood sculpture with Lorrie Goulet at the Art Students League of New York and, while she lived in Norway, trained with master woodcarver Erik Fridstrom at the Viking Ships Museum of Oslo. Deborah works with architects, designers, restoration experts, woodworkers, museums and collectors to create one-of-a-kind original designs or historically accurate reproductions.

Shandra Woworuntu is a member of the U.S. Advisory Council on Human Trafficking, and a survivor of human trafficking and domestic violence. She traveled to the USA expecting a job in the hospitality industry, but was instead forced to work as a prostitute. She is the founder of the Mentari Human Trafficking Survivor Empowerment Program – an organization aimed at empowering human trafficking victims.

QUEENS STORIES: THE STORY OF LORENA BORJAS: THE TRANSGENDER LATINA ACTIVIST

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Dec. 27. 2017 that he would pardon 61 New Yorkers including those facing deportation or barriers to becoming citizens. One of the New Yorkers pardoned was Lorena Borjas, a 57-year old Jackson Heights resident. Borjas was convicted of fourth-degree criminal facilitation in 1994 when she was 23 years old and a victim of human trafficking.
