Rory Staunton Park Dedication with BP Marshall

Queens Borough President Helen Marshall, Monday, Sept.  23, attended the dedication of a new city park named in honor of Rory Staunton, a 12-year-old boy who tragically died from sepsis he contracted after he sustained a cut while playing basketball in April 2012. The half-acre recreation area, named “Rory Staunton Field,” is located in Jackson Heights on 78th Street between Northern Boulevard and 34th Avenue. It is adjacent to The Garden School, which Rory attended. Marshall contributed $1 million of the $6 million the city spent to purchase the land for the park from The Garden School.   Shown are (from l. to r.), Queens Parks Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski, New York City Parks Commissioner Veronica White, City Councilmember Daniel Dromm, Ciaran Staunton (Rory’s father), Rep. Joe Crowley, Kathleen Staunton (Rory’s sister), Orlaith Staunton (Rory’s mother) and Borough President Marshall.
